Dr Robert Lockhart, at over 70 can walk on his hands the length of a football field… all on a fruitarian diet.

When I attended the Australian Fruit Festival at the beginning of this year, Robert Lockhart (almost 30 year raw vegan) was handing out this list of 16 advantages why a fruitarian (fruit-based) raw vegan diet is the optimal way to eat.

He should know. At over 70 Robert can walk on his hands the length of a football field and is in peak physical fitness after years of living this lifestyle.

The list he gave out had just the titles only (in bold). I’ve filled in some of the gaps by describing each benefit more completely.

So let’s get to it!

#1 – A Fruitarian diet provides complete nourishment with the minimum of extraneous substances capable of ‘silting’ up the tissues.

Fruit is the complete package – glucose, phytonutrients, minerals, protein, fat and fibre – but without the toxic load of processed foods, or the acidic and mucous-forming biproducts of meat, dairy or grains. When you eat whole fruit it produces the least toxic residue in the body.

#2 – It is the most easily digested diet, minimising the energy required for digestion (which is substantial) thereby minimizing total food (calorie) requirements.

Digestion is a hugely energy-intensive process. If you lighten the load on your digestion there’ll be more energy available for healing, improved mental clarity and athletic endeavours.

watermelon-410329_1280#3 – It’s palatable.

What’s not to like about fruit? We are sweet seeking creatures and sweet fruit satisfies our palates like no other food. Fast-food companies try to replicate the subtle flavours of fruits in lollies, but no processed food flavouring will ever taste as good as the real deal.

#4 – It is easily obtained and easily prepared

Step 1 – Buy fruit from any supermarket, green grocery, farmer’s market or corner store

Step 2 – Peel if you wish.

Step 3 – Eat

Compare this with what you would have to do to whole grains, or meat to make them palatable. This is THE hands-down simplest diet on the planet – bar none.

#5 – It satisfies the appetite when sufficient has been eaten – Fruitarians are always lean.

The perfect combination of water, glucose and fibre in fruit make it a very filling and satisfying food, provided that a sufficient amount is eaten per meal. Smaller volume but calorie dense foods like meat, dairy, bread, pastries, biscuits and cake will regularly leave you wanting more because they don’t satisfy your body’s need for volume to trigger it’s satiety switch.

You have two options if you eat cooked food. Either you eat to satiety and gain a lot of weight in the process or you restrict your portion sizes and live with a constant craving for more foods.

You could do that, or you could eat sufficient quantities of fruit and be completely satisfied.

#6 – It provides minimum but adequate protein

A fruit-based diet provides just enough protein to meet our requirements. The World Health Organisation stipulates between 30 and 70g, depending on whether you’re male, female, athlete or sedentary. We can get our needs met through fruit, provided we eat enough.

Western humans tend to overeat protein, especially animal protein, because we’ve been told we need to consume more by the meat and livestock and dairy corporations. In fact, there are more problems associated with the overconsumption of protein, than there are people with protein deficiencies. Actually there are no actual recorded cases of protein deficiency.

#7 – It provides minimum but adequate fat

Eating beyond about 10-15% of our calories as fat leads to a whole host of health problems, ranging from heart disease and cancer, all the way through to brain fog and lethargy. On the other hand, eating fruit as your primary source of calories will ensure that your fat intake will be low. Of course, you can include some fatty plant foods such as avocado, nuts and seeds, durian or coconut, but if you eat too much you will surely notice reduced energy levels and a sluggish mind.

#8 – Maximum energy available from the amounts eaten, with only carbon dioxide and water, which are entirely non-toxic, as the by-products.

Nothing more I can add on this really. It’s plainly the most efficient food we humans can eat.

19978953_m#9 – It provides the body with adequate amounts of pure water.

Most people are chronically dehydrated even when they drink a lot of water. The pure water found in fruits and veggies is the most nourishing kind of water you can consume. Try eating a day of only fruit and leafy greens, then switch to a day of cooked food. You’ll notice a profound difference in your hydration levels.

#10 – It results in a favorable alkaline internal state.

Health is the result of an alkaline internal state. Acidosis of the body is caused by living in a toxic environment and eating a diet high in acid-forming foods (meat, dairy, grains, alcohol). Acidosis causing leaching of precious minerals like calcium and iron from your body tissues, and build-up of plaques in your arteries. I know which kind of internal state I’ll be favoring well into old age.

#11 – Favourable intestinal flora predominates in the bowel.

Good bugs LOVE raw fruits and veggies. They are pre-biotics, which means that they provide the optimal nourishment for good bugs to thrive.

#12 – No constipation occurs.

Some people ask me if it’s a hassle to have to go to the bathroom more often. And I say, definitely not. I’d much rather trade a few extra trips of pain-free, fast elimination for bloating, straining and hemarrhoids any day.

#13 – No Auto-intoxication occurs

Auto-intoxication is self-poisoning resulting from the absorption of waste products of metabolism, decomposed intestinal matter, or other toxins produced within the body. All healing starts with a clean bowel. Raw fruits, veggies and water are the best way of cleaning your bowel, and ensuring that it will stay clean. Everything else sticks to your intestinal walls causing putrefaction. Ewww!

#14 – The body de-toxifies itself.

Freed of the burden of complicated digestion, the body has energy to burn in healing and detoxification.

#15 – The blood is clean and low viscosity, there is good circulation with low blood pressure.

The reason for this is the high water content, high soluble fibre foods ingested makes for well-hydrated and oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood, which is able to flow easily, placing the least strain on the heart.

#16 – There are least wear and tear and the least ‘silting up’ of all the body organs and tissues

Fruit is so easily digested and leaves very little toxic residue compared to other foods. Places, where residue accumulates, is often in the joints and muscle tissues. So a major benefit for fruitarians is loose, pain-free joints and strong, supple muscle.

Conclusion – When was the last time you tried a period (say a week to a month) of a 100% fruit-based raw vegan diet?   Try it and notice the positive effects it brings to your body, mind and emotions.  Fruit is truly a wonder food, our most natural god-given food.

    instead of eating to live,

    instead of how you give.

giving your self time to rearrange.

It takes self love and an inquiring mind,
to venture outside our own rut
many of our problems began this way,
    starting in our gut.

    Can it be this simple?
you’ll have to decide for your self,
    one thing is for certain,
it will definitely improve your health.

    raw food’s a special gift,
    opening our innate knowing,
to give our life purpose a lift.

and l am sure everyone does,
raw food is our body cleaner
which will also give you a buzz.

    Only people that really care,
    will make the right choice,
    search deep within yourself,
    listen to your inner voice.

    You can always ignore it,
    which many people do,
but if it’s the truth you really want,
raw food will help you through.

    It will strengthen your conviction,
    as you learn to see,
how nature is the best healer,
I am sure then you’ll agree.

Try to make a start today,
    put some in every meal,
gradually adjust how much you add,
    then notice how you feel.

    Nature’s energy is at One,
if you care to search and find,
open up your eyes to all,
    it’s healthier than staying blind.

Many find it easier to run away,
using pleasure to hide their pain,
    which shuns our innate knowing
    going against our grain.

Use raw food for better health,
    with it’s body mind connection.
all will work out for the best,
when you’re open to honest reflection.

I could go on and on for ever here,
as truth is moving my pen,
the questions you need to get started,
    are why, how and when?

  2. Almost all listed benefits of fruit are also applicable for cooked vegetables. Except #4 – there is one more item – cooking. However, generally, cooked vegetables are more alkaline, higher in minerals and some vitamins, less acidic and sugary. This fact is often missed by fruitarians, but many natural hygeinists appreciate cooked vegetables (not necessary starchy ones, e.g. potatoes) as much as fruit.

    1. Top quality post Anthea!

      @ Maxim:

The fact that (some) cooked vegetables are more alkaline on a ph scale than fruit means nothing when it comes to optimal health. An alkaline-forming diet is the key, not seeking the most alkaline-forming diet. All whole, ripe and raw fruits are alkaline-forming in the body. The same cannot be said for cooked foods (including some vegetables).

I would argue that cooked vegetables generally fail the points numbered: 2 (cooked vegies are often hard to digest and always take longer than ripe fruit to pass through), 3 (there’s a reason kids don’t appreciate the taste of vegetables!), 4 (fruit is always easier to prepare/eat than cooking vegies), 5 (nothing satiates as much as sugar in fruit), 8 (vegetables are often toxic to the body, albeit usually to a small extent) and 9 (fruits are usually higher water content than vegetables).

      1. You will have to explain the comment “vegetables are often toxic to the body” to me. To my knowledge broccoli and onion family are tops when it comes to ant-cancer protection , like sulforaphane and allicin. It is recommended light steaming to destroyed the goitagen in cabbage family, but broccoli sprout is tops for sulforaphane for the liver to synthesize glutathione.

  3. Well said Lachlan. Most people miss the obvious and just argue because they cant understand how simple the truth is. Humans tend to complicate everything. And they use defensiveness to support misguided ideas

  4. Ive been on and off raw for about 5 years now. I struggle staying 100% because of lack of quality produce in Victoria. Being a yoga and meditation teacher coming into the sensing mind more often is fundamental in tuning into our consciousness. Ive never felt more connected than when I am 100% raw. It is a rollercoaster and I wish I could find satisfaction through a 100% RV diet.

    1. Personally I think 100% PEACE with food is more important than 100% raw, Aaron. We can get amazing benefits from a very high raw diet. Consistency is definitely what counts.

  5. I loved fruits, but I have not been able to be on a fruitarian diet, haven’t even been able to do a raw vegan diet, even after going for 4 years to raw vegan potluck. I feel that raw is too “cool” for me, and not DENSE enough. Appear to need bread and potatoes…the starch. Also, I am very disturbed by the constant information that pouring out from the functional medical sector demonizing “sugar”, and the glucose that in fruits. After they demonized the “sugar” in the refined sugar and white wheat flour(dirty bath water), they throw out the fruits along with the veggie (the baby)and promoted a ketogenic
    for everyone beside epileptic.

  6. I have been on a walk since 2011 cleaning house. My goal is be 100% raw whether that be fruit alone or veggies included. However along that path I keep running into the problem with a B12 source. Does our body really need B12 and if so why can’t it ne found in raw fruit and veg? This is a real issue and the only answer I have found is a vegan resource that says it has to be added as a supplement. Has this 70 year old fruitarian any council on this, has he every addressed it along his path? That is not the reason I have not become 100% raw, there are other factors, but I would like to have the answer sooner than later.

  7. Hi Anthea. What are your opinions about and have you treated people with Diabetes type 2 on a high fruit diet. Even with going on a very low fat intake is it better for diabetics to stick more to fruit vegetables ie. Tomatoes, cucumber etc. What if there are Diabetics with a high glucose intolerance. Would vegetable consumption be better. Please advise. Many thanks with kind regards, Colleen.

    1. Hi Colleen,
Sweet fruit, in itself, does not cause blood sugar spikes. Too much fat in the diet is what prevents insulin from doing it’s job of transferring circulating blood glucose into the cells. I know many type 2’s who have completely reversed their diabetes on a fruit-based low fat raw vegan or high raw diet. Having said that, initially it may work best for someone to emphasize veggies in the short term (1-2weeks) until their body clears of some of the fat residue. Hope this helps.
